This is a common complaint: My computer is slow. Very slow.
There are few things that are more irritating in life than a slow PC or laptop. Windows users know all too well that with time, your system will start to slow down. Whether your computer is hanging, slowing down or taking hours to start, poor performance can make you angry and tired.
Doing simple things, like opening Chrome seems to take forever and programs which used to run properly may stop working. After all, there are only three things certain in life: death, taxes, and slow computers after hours of Facebook and Youtube
You can buy a new PC or laptop, but that costs money. No, our first attempt should be to try to get free performance from your existing computer.
Thankfully, it is easy to make your PC or laptop as fast as the day you got it. Since we’re just a couple of weeks into the new year, think of this like a spring clean for your PC or laptop: remove unwanted programs, delete temporary files and tweak some settings which will make a big difference to any computer.
In the following ten easy and simple tips and tricks we show you how to speed up your computer without spending a single rupee. Do these steps one by one and see your PC or laptop working faster with each step. Most of them only take a few minutes. Let’s start then, shall we?
1.Change up your start-up
Does your PC or laptop takes ages to start? Disabling auto start programs will fix it.
A whole lot of programs want to start automatically every time you boot, so you don’t need to wait when you later want to use them. Each one slows down the boot process, and some eat up a lot of your computer’s RAM and continue to slow down Windows afterwards. When you have twenty of those programs all trying to run automatically when you when start your system, they drastically increase the start-up time of your computer.
These are not all bad, some of these programs are necessary computer functions. Your antivirus program should start when you boot and keep running as long as your PC is on. Other programs that need to run in the background to work, such as Dropbox, should also auto-start.
But the other unnecessary programs—even good ones that you use frequently—don’t really need to run all the time and slow down your computer. You don’t have to remove the programs from your computer to speed things up. You can just stop them from automatically starting up when you start Windows.
To see how bad the situation is, type msconfig into the Start Menu to open the System Configuration window. Click on the Startup tab to view everything that starts running when you boot into Windows. If you’re on Windows 8 or 10, this tab will open the Startup tab of the Task Manager.
Once in the Startup tab, you can see all the auto-start programs. As you examine the list, think about what programs don’t need to be running at all times. You can simply start unchecking boxes (Windows 7) or right-clicking and choosing Disable (Windows 8 and 10) to prevent items from launching at start-up. You can reverse this process at any time by enabling the program again.
Be sure that you know what a program does before disabling it. If you don’t recognize a program, check whether it is a necessary Windows program or some unwanted software (or worse yet, a virus or malware) by searching for it online to find more information and to gauge the program’s necessity. You don’t want to stop your antivirus or cloud backup software from running at start-up, since you need those active all the time.
If you’re not sure what to disable here, common culprits include Google Chrome, Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, iTunes, QuickTime, Steam, Skype, Cyberlink YouCam, Evernote and Spotify. Although adjusting startup programs is a careful procedure, checking the start-up list once a month can mean the difference between seconds or hours of waiting for your computer to start.
2.Give it the reboot
This tip is simple. If your PC is behaving horribly slow, try rebooting. Restart your PC at least once a week, espcially if you use it a lot. Yes, it’s an obvious solution, but people tend to forget the obvious.
The sleep or hibernate setting will save power, but only a full restart clears out the cobwebs in Windows’ brain and give it a fresh start. Do it every day if your PC is really slow.
Restarting closes all the programs running on your PC – not only the programs you see running, but also many unwanted backgroud services that migh have been started by other programs and never stopped. Restarting can fix strange problems when the exact reason is hard to find.
If you keep many programs or websites open that you think restarting is difficult, that’s a sign that you should restart your PC. The more things you have open and the longer you keep them running, the higher chances that your PC will slow down and run low on RAM.
